Msgr William F O'Brien Assembly Durham

It’s official.  Our assembly gave birth to a new assembly at St. Matthews Catholic Church in northern Durham.

Monsignor William F. O’Brien Assembly, 3365,  is now official.  The new assembly was formed from about 30 members of our assembly that lived in northern Durham, but associated with our assembly.  We did the same thing in 2005, when we formed as an outgrowth of Msgr. Francis K. O’Brien Assembly, 2254, in Burlington.

The Catholic population is rapidly growing in North Carolina.  New churches are getting built, older ones are expanding and we are even building a new cathedral for the Raleigh Diocese.  Learn more

Why not join the patriotic degree in your hometown?

This new, steady growth brings new members to both the Knights of Columbus Councils and to the Knights’ Patriotic Fourth Degree or Assembly.  Other assemblies that were created since our assembly was chartered include

  • Pope John Paul II Assembly, 3017 Kernersville
  • Foothills Trinity Assembly, 3076, King
  • Our Lady of La Sallette Assembly, 3115, Shallotte
  • Central Piedmont Assembly, 3158, Concord, and
  • Fr. Francis Connolly Assembly, 3253, Greensboro

The Resurrection is an important part of our belief.  This story is about Ron DiCianni,  a painter who creates a large mural of the resurrrection.  A story that unfolds as he describes what he has created and the inspiration he felt as he painted the mural.

Assembly News

We welcome you to our web site and news blog.  We are an active Assembly and we enjoy what we do.

Our members include many veterans that are active in veterans groups like the Vietnam Veterans of America, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.  They have served their country, now they serve their community and church.

We are the patriotic degree.  However, you do not have to be a veteran to join the Assembly.  Each of us shows our patriotism in a different way.  As Knights, we show it through good citizenship and programs to help hospitalized veterans and people with special needs.

Tux Time

If you have been wearing your Fourth Degree Tux for about ten years (includes this writer), your mid-line may have spread.

If you have a synthetic fabric tux, remember that summer is fast approaching.  We have already seen 80 degree days and it is still spring.  So, what’s a Sir Knight to do?

Think about upgrading to a 100% wool tux.  Yep, you would be more comfortable in a new, well fitting, cool tux.  It’s affordable too!

Right in our own neighborhood, Hillsborough, there is a company who sells off rental tuxes.  It is Formalwear Outlet on Millstone Drive. The best suits are retained and they have a huge selection.  We visited them recently and did some pricing.

A jacket is $55 and pants are up there in price.  But, wait!  They have a special package for just $95.00.  You get your own tuxedo jacket, tuxedo pants, shirt, vest, tie, studs and cufflinks.  And, you get to try it on.  They carry top brands like After Six, Andrew Fezza, Chaps Ralph Lauren, Perry Ellis, Tommy Hilfiger and more.

For those of you living a good distance from Hillsborough, you can order by mail and your fit and satisfaction is guaranteed.

Let’s not forget our ladies, gentlemen.  They also have gowns!

Chris writes us from the comfort of his easy chair…

“The road that we are responsible for cleaning is “Bowden Rd.” a short 1.5 mile stretch that connects Jones Ferry Rd. to Old Greensboro Rd.
Mike Pacilio has supplies that he will hand them on to Mike Memrick. Thanks much for  picking up the work while I’m temporarily decommissioned. I’m going into port for an overhaul and hope to be back to active duty by mid November.”

Fall Festival a Success!

The wheel was spinning at the Assembly-sponsored roulette wheel.  Patients of the Community Living Center filled the VAMC dining room for a Fall Festival of fun.

About ten groups joined in the festival, including the Disabled American Veterans, Marine Corps League, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars from Durham and Raleigh.  Our assembly activity is funded by the Chapel Hill Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Don Williams was the keeper of the table and was joined by Robert Larson and his new bride, Rebecca.  Also there was our Faithful Navigator, Chris Cushing, and David Lucas.

The games began at 7 p.m. and included various games of chance.  There was poker, bag toss races, horse racing and other games.  Everyone was a winner.  Prizes included canteen chitbooks, cash, and special ditty bags full of good stuff for our vets.

David Lucas and his crew of VA volunteers can use your support.  No gathering is too large.  Our vets enjoy visits from churches, veterans groups, and local community service and church teams.  Why not sign up for their next BINGO night at the VA Medical Center?  You will have a great time with your brother sir knights.

Caldwell July 4th Parade Assembly Color Corps

If you were not there, you missed a great opportunity to give back something to our local community.  There is nothing that makes you stand taller than to carry our national ensign in a parade.  When you approach the crowd they begin to stand, come to attention and salute.  Some eyes tear up, others glisten.

Caldwell, NC, is one mile of proud North Carolinians.  Many have themselves served.  Many others have a brother, sister, father, mother, or other family now serving in Iraq, Afghanistan or other hot spot where our men and women serve today.

Sure, it was hot.  It might have been too hot at 88 degrees  for our Color Corps, but they proudly wore their full regalia and led the Knights of Columbus contingent. A steady breeze kept their flags gently flapping.   It was the least they could do for Caldwell as their family members were a lot hotter.  Weather.com is reporting that it is 97 right now, 91 tonight, and a sweltering 115 degrees tomorrow.  Our troops endure that day in and day out with full backpacks, gear, ammo and water!

Our Color Corps this year consisted of George Cummings, Chris Cushing and Joe Accarito.  Joe was able to capture some great shots of the knights and some of the veterans.  You can view them on-line.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars, C.V. Cummings Chapel Hill Post 9100, also has a video on-line and will soon publish photos.  (Connect to video site)
